Things to Do in Unawatuna

Sun-drenched and beautiful, Unawatuna is truly a beach holiday haven. Home to a number of famous beach villas in Sri Lanka, this beach town offers much to do and discover.

Dalawella Beach

Dalawella beach may be famous for its rope swing but the location is much more than that. It is a silky stretch of sand lined with coconut palms and the deep blueness of the Indian Ocean. The beach is located near some of the best beach villas in Sri Lanka and it is a great spot to catch a spectacular sunset.

Sea Turtle Hatchery

The Habaraduwa Sea Turtle Hatchery is just a 20-minute drive away from Unawatuna. The hatchery is run by volunteers who are trying to save the sea turtle population in the area from numerous dangers. The hatchery takes in sea turtle eggs, incubate the lot methodically and release baby turtles back to the sea once they hatch. They also take in injured turtles to nurse them back to good health. These turtles too get to go back to their salty, sensual home once they are better. The hatchery is open daily for visitors from 7 30 am to 06.00 pm.

Spend the day at the Jungle beach

Jungle beach is merely an 8-minute drive away from Unawatuna. A small hill and plenty of foliage shelter part of the circular beach and visitors can access it by climbing down the hill. If you want to enjoy the beach in relative isolation, opt to visit the beach early in the morning before 9 am. A rudimentary shack by the beach provides wooden sun beds and iced fruit smoothies to visitors. You could take snorkeling gear and explore the shallow depths for vibrant sea life or simply lounge about the beach. But don?t forget to take a dip in the ocean to cool off.
